Campbell Rain Dance Festival 2013

We were excited to be invited back for another round at the 2nd Annual Campbell Rain Dance Festival in Berthoud last weekend. The afternoon started off a little sketchy with high winds and some torrential rain – we noted that tornado warnings were issued in Greeley and at DIA. And while the wind did tear down the stage tent, after a few hours the weather passed leaving a cool crisp evening perfect for a lively bonfire, flowing beverages, and fine live music. Good folks pitched in to get the stage back in working condition, Ethan was in fine form getting the sound dialed in, and it was time to party! Justin sat in with Jimbo Darville and the Truckadours who didn’t waste any time kickin’ the evening energy into high gear. ZM took over and had a great time running the set list below. Two years running this has been a terrific event – thanks for the invitation!

Kid’s Cure – Good Morning!

Drizzle and rain couldn’t dampen spirits this morning at the Kid’s Cure 5k to benefit Brent’s Place. We were thrilled to be asked to play this event, and happy to be part of the community. Never mind the predawn wake-up call, Wash Park was a great location for an outdoor venue, and with Ethan and Justin of euphoricsoundbyte we made the most of this opportunity. Can’t wait to come back for another dose next summer!

Laughing Goat Set List and Notes 5-3-2013

Talk about a night of contrast. At last week’s DaVita event we maxed out all 32 channels on our mixing board. Last night at the Laughing Goat we downshifted and worked with just 8 channels. In the world of live music that’s an insane difference, especially when five of those channels are dedicated to vocal mics. Justin’s new hand-made cajon was a part of the solution, as was playing keys on the house acoustic piano.

Once the music kicked in, any evidence of sound challenges faded as an invisible connection gradually materialized between people on stage and people in the crowd. Kyle was in the zone. Emily simply killed it on harmonies. Phil filled the pocket with grooves both structured and freeing. Geoff and Ted passed the electric guitar back and forth, each song reaching some new tier on a steady march up the mountain of musical vibe. The small room got filled with big energy, and our appreciation abounds for the good people who shared the evening with us. On a night like last night, it’s the best place to be.

DaVita Corporate Festival 4-24-2013

New stats recorded at last week’s event for DaVita in downtown Denver:
– First time playing a corporate festival with two blocks cordoned off in front of the Civic Center in downtown Denver.
– First time cranking the new JBL speakers, especially the new bass cabinet. On the streets of Denver, with storied buildings to contain the sound, we were thumping!
– First time Johnny’s truck battery died during the load-in, while parked on the curb at 14th & Arapahoe.
– First time relying on a Denver city cop to help jump start the battery.
– Maybe the coldest outdoor temps we’ve played in to date (dropped into the 30s by the end of the night) and there was residual snow from the previous day’s snowstorm. But hot food and cold drinks and smiling people passing by kept our bodies warm and spirits high.

FATE Brewery Notes and Set List

Turning 40 wasn’t supposed to be a big deal. Nothing to worry about, I assured myself, it’s just another day. But thanks to my wife Cheryl, and FATE Brewery, and the Zen M gang, my 40th birthday turned out to be a big deal after all. A very good deal.

Cheryl asked what I wanted to do on my birthday. “Play music.” She searched high and low and finally got in touch with the amazing people at FATE. Flexible, approachable, warm and welcoming, the managers at FATE worked with us for a combo dinner + Zen Mustache performance. So great!

I love being in a band. Pulling together a show like last night takes work. Not just writing and rehearsing music, practicing and tightening up the performance. On the day of a show we haul a several hundred pounds of gear, not just our instruments but also speakers, monitors, mixing board, amplifiers, equalizers, cables (LOTS of cables!), mic stands, and on an on. Setting up the stage can take 2-3 hours of lifting and moving and crawling and at the end we’re a sweaty bunch.

There’s the stress of connecting all the equipment together so it all works. There’s anxiety checking the sound in front of a restaurant full of dinner guests.

There’s the set list and reading the room for how to start (do we ease into things, or start with a bang – how many covers and which ones).

There’s walking the room and talking to fans who’ve made the trek to hear us play. There’s playing with the knowledge this is a live performance, and anything can (and without exception something will) happen. Once we start, there’s no safety net and we have only ourselves to rely on.

And despite the work it takes to pull off a show like last night (or maybe, BECAUSE of the work – at least in part) the payoff is huge. Let me say that again – the payoff is HUGE. It’s a barely controlled build-up and release of energy. No other way I can think of spending a birthday that would be more fulfilling or more fun.

So, thank you FATE and Zen M for the opportunity and thank you Cheryl for pulling it all together. Here’s to another birthday. And may the next 40 be as awesome as the first!

A Damn Fine Day

About 11:00 Saturday night the band was loading gear out of the Merc when Geoff said, “That was a fun day.” Have to agree with you buddy!

WinterFest was bound to be fun – but playing outdoors in December in Denver had us worried about seeing our breath when we sang. Mother Nature had another idea and the balmy 70-degree temps encouraged loads of neighborhood folks to come check out the festival on Old South Pearl. Santa, who made multiple appearances at the festival, was probably wishing he’d brought his shorts and Hawaiian shirt!

We want to thank Marilyn and the folks at HobNob Events for inviting us, and a special shout to Allen at Space Recording for making things so easy.

Wrapping up after WinterFest, we hustled up to Jamestown for one of our favorite mountain venues at the Jamestown Merc. This little room doesn’t feel like a place for a rock-n-roll concert, but it transforms perfectly and the room has a unique energy all its own. As a band we joke about the copious amounts of gear ZM possesses and at the Merc we pack it all into a smaller space than seems possible. This picture doesn’t even capture the two light rigs floating above the main speakers, or the floor monitors wrapping the stage:
ZM Gear at the Jamestown Merc

It was another stellar night. Joe and the rest of the Merc staff fed us and kept our thirsts quenched. People from all walks of life came together to celebrate the basic human function of being joyful together. What a party! Our buddy Joe came up to record the house. Our main man Ethan was at the sound board making the band sound great. And hey, all you Party Bus people get a shout from the manager at the Merc, who complimented us at the end of the night saying we always bring out people who have super positive energy and who are also respectful and polite. Yeah!

Top moment of the day for me came at the Merc. Early in the set after playing a couple of covers, we had a crew of people out of their chairs shaking some booty. Next on the set list was Hey Jane, which has the potential to slow things down. Momentary question mark within the band, then Kyle made the split-second decision to go for it. And damn if it didn’t pull more people off their seats and push the energy up to the next level. Props to our bud BJ Callahan for creating that gem of a song.

So Geoff you’re right. That was a fun, fun day. Two great shows, lots of new and returning faces, and a whole lot of music. Let’s do that again, soon!

Waterloo 11-16-2012 – ZenHeads or Mustachios or (?)

Small stage but big night at the Waterloo. Couldn’t believe how the energy from the crowd picked us up all night long. Loads of people came out – from the bride and groom whose wedding we played last month, to our photographer/bass player buddy and his posse, to a deep cast of characters who have proven themselves true ZenHeads. Or are they Mustachios? Hmm, gotta figure that out… Set list below.

Denver – Granby – Estes, August 11-12, 2012

Check out these logistics from the 3-course weekend Zen Mustache completed on August 11-12, 2012. We started with a 5am wake-up call to play at the DaVita 5k run/walk fundraiser in Denver. After packing up gear we headed out for groceries and other supplies, then boogied up to the first annual Ranchstock festival outside of Granby. Great afternoon/evening of true mountain music. Three full bands, a host of other musicians, and overnight camping. Then the next morning it was up early again, packing tents and driving over Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park, to find some showers and some breakfast, before heading over to ZM’s first-ever wedding gig at Wild Basin Lodge outside of Estes Park. Amazing logistics, and a great group of guys – dare I say friends – tackling the prospect of three shows in 2 days in mountains. This email came from Ted the day before we engaged:

Stage Stop 8-24-12

Stage Stop in Rollinsville. Cool mountain evening. Neon in the windows and friendly staff serving pitchers as the coal trains rumble down from the mines. These mountain communities have little to hide and plenty to share, we just need to visit. Last night Zen Mustache met new friends and reconnected with familiar faces – and played a heck of a fun show. Seems the Stage Stop is an easy place to talk with folks, have a drink or a meal, or take in some satisfying music and dancing. Can’t wait to get back onto this special stage! Special thanks to April, James and Becky for taking good care of us. Until next time, be well Rollinsville!

Epic-ness in Jamestown.

Banner at Jamestown

How to have an epic evening.
1. Book a show at a venue that has the friendliest, chillest people. In the mountains is preferred.
2. See if they’ve got amazing home-grown cooking on the menu for the night you’ve booked.
3. Jambalaya works great for this purpose.
4. Get another great band to join you for the night. Be friends with them, and not just on Facebook.
5. Make sure someone in the crowd has a birthday. Or just got engaged. Or both.
6. Make sure the space for the musicians is tight, for example (purely hypothetical) it’s a space that should barely fit four, but then you try to fit seven. Then try to squeeze in the other band on top of that.
7. Bring your best and brightest sound man. He’s gonna be working hard at the board.
8. Bring lights.
9. Find a talented show opener solo act.
10. If possible, do all of this on the night of a spring thunder snow storm.

Nothing but epic last night in Jamestown. If you’re in need of a little ‘epic’ in your life, come out to the next Zen Mustache show. Seems ‘epic’ follows us wherever we go… Gotta love that.
